It is the steps you take now with weed clearance and rubbish removal that will help determine whether your home survives a wildland fire or not
Montebello Fire Department personnel go out twice a year, once in the Spring and once in the Fall, to ensure homeowners throughout the city have proper weed clearance and defensible space around their home.
Dead or dying leaves, grasses or brush should be removed. Needles and leaves should be removed from roofs and gutters. All tree limbs should be trimmed at least six feet from the ground and at least 10 feet from chimneys. Homeowners are encouraged to remove or prune vegetation near windows and to use fire resistant plants in the landscaping around their homes.
Built up leaves, wigs and branches should be removed from the ground. Tree canopies should be trimmed regularly so that tree branches are a minimum of 10 feet from other trees and structures.
When clearing brush and vegetation, be sure you’re doing the right thing the right way
- Use trimming, mowing and power equipment before 10 a.m. and after 6 p.m.
- Never use a lawn mower in drý vegetation. Use a weed trimmer to cut down dry weeds and grass
- Keep a cell phone nearby and call 911 immediately in case of fire. Never put yourself in harm’s way to extinguish a fire.
